Meet Daan Koens
Daan Julius Koens (born in Amsterdam, 1994) is a self-taught artist residing in Rotterdam. From an early age, he was fascinated by fantasy and by drawing dreamlike creatures and landscapes. The tropical nature of the former Dutch Antilles, where he grew up, profoundly inspires his work.
At 21, Koens started at the art academy and discovered his passion for oil painting. However, during his first year, he decided to leave the academy and continue as a self-taught artist. After a tumultuous period, he developed a unique style characterized by realistic and cubist representations.

‘To be a woman in the Center of Power’ is part of a series of paintings by Koens, elaborating on the neo-cubist style in which the artist has been working for some time.
Thematically, the work offers a subtle critique of contemporary neoliberalism, delving into the intimate dynamics of high-society dinner parties where decisions that shape the world are truly made.
