Jesse Fischer grew up in a village surrounded by farmland, grassy fields, mud and trees. As a child, he spent his time adventuring outside: catching frogs and birds, trespassing, spying on farmers, mapping every little secret spot. Years later, he returned to this place from his past, full of meaning and on-the-go mythology, expecting this sense of vibrancy to have faded. But, to his surprise, the place was still as mysterious.
Conversion centers on a moment from this recent visit, at a local river he used to play at. Next to it stands an abandoned shed that has remained unchanged over twenty years. As a child, Jesse never dared to enter it, and when he approached it now, something stopped him once again. In line with its title, the work uncovers a familiar in-between state, when the old no longer works, and the new has yet to fully take shape.

Jesse Fischer: Murky Waters
Love locks on bridges, roadside memorials. Small, often unnamed rituals. Jesse Fischer (1996), who lives and works in Tilburg, paints where these contemporary gestures meet ancient folktales and mythologies. Amongst other, Slavic, Dutch and Sumerian folklore emerge in present day scenes, making his works feel like a present under pressure.

First artist-first art fair
2012
Unfair Editions is a project from the Unfair Foundation, founded in 2012. Unfair is an artist-first initiative aiming to improve the cultural infrastructure. We have been dedicated to promoting emerging contemporary artists for over a decade, working with over 600 artists in more than 70 events. Our collaborations with these artists form the backbone of our platform, which aims to create connections, curate and promote the next generation of leading artists. By putting the artist first, we strive to create a fair art community where people can discover and buy art directly from the maker.

Editions is born
2020
Unfair Editions is launched to promote and distribute an affordable selection of curated artworks. At our fair, we curate unique overviews of affordable works in edition by artists that we love and have worked with in many of our other projects. Did you know the artists we present at the fair, are selected by yearly changing curatorial advisory committees, consisting of leading players in the cultural sector?

Working on a fair art market
Now
Since our foundation we have worked with over 600 artists in over 70 events, showcasing up- and coming artist. From this we have launched over 40 editions and many more to come! Since 2022 Unfair has invested in bridging the gap between the world of art fairs and new generations of art buyers and collectors. All proceeds flow back to our Artist Fund, with which we stimulate the development of emerging artists. With Unfair Editions, we produce and promote somewhere between 12 and 20 editions yearly, get while they are hot, and feel good about doing good at the same time!
