Susanne Khalil Yusef makes immersive colorful installations by combining a wide range of media such as murals, ceramic, textiles and sculptures. At first glance Yusef’s brightly colored work seems lighthearted and playful but if you look closer, it refers to distress and dangerous situations. In her work she raises critical questions about themes such as homeland and displacement, identity and socio-geographic power relations. The stories in her work are closely related to her own biography - such as the conflicts in her home country Palestine. This silkscreen print is inspired by a design for a tufted tapestry that Yusef made earlier. The title “A last glance” is taken from a painting she found of Dutch painter William Halewijn with the title “ Palestinian refugee – A last glance” from the 50’s.
Yusef is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Her work has been included in the collections of the Museum Arnhem, the Dutch Textile Museum in Tilburg and the Province of Gelderland.
