Since discovering a small Easter chocolate rabbit in 2015, the figure has come to play a significant role in Mirthe’s practice, reappearing in various forms and sizes over the years. With its gaze up to the sky and a brush and palette in its hands, the wrapper initially encouraged her to paint. After enlarging the image and screen-printing it onto aluminum foil, it became a benchmark against which she could test her new paintings, placing them alongside the wrapper’s bold and poppy appearance.
More recently, the rabbit became a gateway into ceramics when Mirthe also enlarged the chocolate itself using a slip-casting technique. This eventually led her to Arita, Japan, where she studies centuries-old porcelain techniques. There, for once and for all, she returned the rabbit to its original size, firing it onto porcelain.
