In his ongoing series Studio Assemblages, Trapenberg brings his archive together on a single sheet of raw steel. The works are made up of test prints, postage stamps, postcards, vinyl stickers and handwritten notes, all held in place with magnets. Nothing is fixed or framed, so images can shift, overlap or replace one another. Trapenberg: “That openness reflects a way of working I recognise from the Caribbean, where you make use of what is available and things remain in motion. It also marked a shift in my practice, moving away from straightforward portraiture towards treating the photographic process itself as the final work."
For Unfair Editions, Trapenberg wanted to extend this approach into an edition that is not just a reproduction of a single work, but a way to question what an edition can be. The work brings together contact sheets of negatives that reveal how the artist photographs, cropped fragments from images in his archive, some dating back almost ten years, and car fresheners as objects that circulate within everyday image culture. Each piece is assembled by hand, so every edition carries slight differences and becomes, in that sense, unique.
