Meet Bas Schippers

Much of Schippers' inspiration comes from classical painting and sculpture, such as the idealized muscular bodies in ancient Greek statues. Horses also play a pivotal role in his work, embodying the perfect balance between hard and soft, masculine and feminine that Schippers aspires to. Other frequent protagonists of his works are angels, with wings almost too heavy and large to fly with and muscular bodies. These angels exude strength, as they struggle to make sense of earthly norms, feeling displaced and alienated in the process.
All these influences, together with Schippers’ persona and bodybuilding lifestyle, are integrated into his visual language, where they both confirm and challenge hyper-masculine features. By externalizing his inner conflicts, the artist seeks to find logic behind them.
